Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the female adolescent's weight control behaviors to their eating disorder symptoms and depression and to identify what factors affected their eating disorder.
Methods
The subjects in this study were 108 girl students from a middle school and 99 girl students from a high school in Chonan. The data were collected in March, 2003, using the questionnaire of weight control behaviors, the Eating Disorders Inventory(EDI), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI).
Results
1) 79 students (38.2%) had experienced weight control behavior in the past, and 68(32.9%) had been experiencing within six months. They were using the methods as the restraint of foods, exercise(walking and running), laxatives using, and so on. 2) The mean score of eating disorder symptoms(EDI) was 55.91 and 34.41 in depression. 3) The students who experienced weight control scored significantly higher than those who didn’t in the areas of 'drive for thinness*, 'bulimia', 'body dissatisfaction 1 , 'interoceptive awareness*, ineffectiveness', and depression. 4) The depression had positive correlations with eating disorder symptoms except for 'perfectionism*. 5) As a result of multiple regression analysis in consideration of weight-control behaviors, body-shape satisfaction, subjective body-fatness, BMI, age and depression, the factors associated with eating disorder symptoms made a 53.3% prediction of the symptoms.
Conclusion
The results of this study suggest that the students who experienced weight control need the preventive education program which was considered the above six variables.
Key Words: Female adolescent; Weight-control behaviors; Eating disorder symptoms; Depression
