Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of videotaped self-observation on developing insight among schizophrenic clients and to enhance the insight of Schizophrenic clients. Clients who are aware of their psychological condition, such as suffering from Schizophrenia, can manage their own psychopathologic problematic behaviors and show higher compliance on regular medication.
A non-equivalent control group with pre-post tests was utilized. The participants of the study were recruited from a Neuro-Psychiatric hospital in Daegu and the study was conducted from Nov. 15th of 2000 to Mar. 15th of 2001. A total of 44 clients were recruited for the study (experimental group = 19, control group = 25).
In order to evaluate the effect of the videotaped self-observation on the insight of the mental disorder, the Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD) was utilized. The participants of the study answered the SUMD twice, initial test and post-treatment test. For experimental group, their psychopathologic problematic behaviors were videotaped and were showed to the clients themselves after 2 or 3 weeks. For control group, there was no treatment.
The data were analyzed by the Chi-square test, and t-test using SPSSWN 8.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows :
1) There were no significant differences in insight of the mental disorder between experimental and control groups in the initial test.
2) There were significant differences in the levels of insight between the experimental and control groups after treatment (t=-3.80, p = .000).
The sub-dimensions of the SUMD, especially consequence of mental disorder, the effect of medication, asociality, blunted affection and impaired communication were significantly different between the two groups.
The results of this study highlighted the effectiveness of the videotaped self-observation on developing insight of schizophrenic clients as a therapeutic nursing intervention. |
