The Effects and Development of a Comprehensive Health Education Program on Improvement of Quality of Life in persons with Epilepsy

Abstract
The purpose of this research attempted to develop the Comprehensive Health Education Program on persons with epilepsy and identity the effect. Methods : This study used an experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design with a convenience Sample of 26 adults with epilepsy visiting to the appointed hospitals of Rose club in the district of Seoul and Kung-gi from July 5th, 2001 to October 22th, 2001 educating them one time per a week, all 6 times for 15 hours. The effects were checked out 3 times, before the education program, immediately after and 4 weeks later. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to analyze the differences between the pretest, posttest and follow up test scores on quality of life. Result : The conclusions of this study are summarized as follows : 1. There were significant differences in the frequence of seizure, medication compliance (S= 115.5, P = .001). side effect(t = -4.777, P = .001), Stigma(t=-8.785, P = .001), daily living adaptation(t=-l 1.154, P = .001). Selfesteem(t=8.446, P=.001), anxiety(t=-7.867, P=.001), memory(S = -108, P=.001) between pretest, posttest and follow - up test. 2. Education satisfaction evaluation shows that stress management gets the highest point as an average 4.49 that is the third subject, but daily living adaptation gets the lowest point as an average 4.20 that is the fifth' s. 3. The result of content analysis on living experience and education effect through group discussion as follows : First, Recognition changing through education under The Understanding on Epilepsy and The Way of Overcoming, the attendants were released from distortion, epilepsy is hereditary. They recognized that it is a disorder of brain and the important thing is to do best. They hoped on recovering and self-confidence. Second, Under The Stress Management, they understood the relation of stress and seizure, could control the seizure through stress and did best to find out the way of getting rid of stress. Third, Under The Drug Symptom Management, they recognized the reason of taking medicine regularly and convinced of recovering through medicinal therapy. Forth. Under Dealing with Daily Living, they found out the reason of seizure, and exercised restraint taking alcohol, tobacco and coffee. Under Self-assertive Training, they recognized expressing their feelings is to get the rights, tried to asc the questions of the remedy plans and their health condition to the doctor. Fifth, Under Dealing with Memory, they used the tool of supporting memory to improve it. Under Planning for the Future, they wanted normal life, good relationship with others, their own living and volunteering.
