The Effect of Family Education Program on the Knowledge and the Burden of Schizophrenia Patient's Family

Abstract
Purpose
This study is to identify the effect of family education program as a nursing intervention for reducing burden family.
Methods
This study was devised with a quasi-experimental design using non-eqivalent control group pretest - posttest design. The subjects of the research were the families of inpatients and outpatients with schizophrenia at psychiatry ward of the general hospital in I city. The total number of subjects were 24 members, half of them were experimental group, and the other half were control group. The data were collected from January 18 to March 8 in 2002. We applied the questionnaire method to the data collection and used the measures : Index of Knowledge Scale(Lim & Ahn, 2000) and Family Burden Scale(Kim, et al., 1999). The research procedure was drawn up by using the questionnaire concerning the general characters, patient's characters, knowledge and burden at the beginning of the family education. In this research design, we treated the family education program, which was conducted 8 times within 8 weeks and examined the knowledge and burden after intervention. In the case of the control group, the research procedure was equally enacted as on the experimental group except for the family education. The analysis of collected data was done using descriptive statistics including real numbers, percentage, averages, and standard deviations, and Chi-square test, t-test, paired t-test using the SPSS WIN 10.0 program.
Results
1. The examination of the same quality showed that there were not significant differences in the general characters, patient s characters between the experimental group and the control group. The examination of the same quality showed that there were not significant differences in knowledge and burden between the experimental group and the control group. 2. The level of knowledge of experimental group which was applied by the family education program is 23.08±2.81, which is higher than the control group, which is 18.17±2.21, and it is significant difference statistically(t=-4.326, p = .000). So, the first hypothesis, that the level of knowledge of experimental group will be significantly higher than that of the control group, was accepted. 3. The degree of burden of experimental group which was applied by the family education program is 47.08±18.59, which is lower than the control group, which is 52.00±27,42. and it is significant difference statistically(t = 2.483, p = .029). So the second hypothesis, that the degree of burden of experimental group will be significantly lower than that of the control group, was accepted.
Conclusion
The bottom line is a family education program of small group can use as an independent nursing intervention to be easily implemented in clinics to increase knowledge and reduce the burden of schizophrenia patient's family. Therefore the data in this research can suggest that it not only improved quality of life for family but also helped recovery and rehabilitation of patient.
