Abstract
Purpose
This study was conducted to inve the effect of a horticultural therapy on the improvement quality of life and the depression of the elderly people who lived in a social institution.
Methods
This was a quasi experimental study with pretest-posttest design. The subjects with no psychiatric history were selected in two similar social institutions for the elderly. They were randomly assigned two group. The total number of participants was 59 (29 for the experimental group and 30 for the control group). A horticultural therapy intervention was conducted for 11 weeks (July 3 to Sep 25. 2001).
Results
The results of this study were as follows : 1. "The quality of life in the experimental group with a horticultural therapy program would be more increased than control group" There was not a significant difference of quality of the life between two groups (t = '557, p= .582). 2. "The experimental group which participated in a horticultural therapy program would improved in elderly depression rather than control group". There was not a significant difference of the depressing between the groups (t= .793, p = .435). I found that the horticultural therapy program was limited as a short-term therapeutic program, because the quality of life is a comprehensive and multidimensional concept.
Conclusion
Even though there were no statistical significant differences between the groups, the elderly in the experimental group were highly motivated to participate in the horticultural program. Their quality of life was slightly improved but not statistically significant. Further studies are needed to assess the horticultural therapy program the elderly.
