Masturbation of Korean Adolescents

Abstract
This study was performed (1) to identify prevalence, onset of masturbation, sources of information about masturbation, and emotional response toward one's own experience of masturbation of Korean adolescents and (2) to compare the difference on prevalence, onset of masturbation, emotional response to masturbation and a sources of information about masturbation between student adolescents and delinquent adolescent, and between male and female and (3) to provide useful data for construction of sex education for adolescents. The research design of this study was a questionnaire survey. Subject served for this study consisted of 1.178 student adolescents and 965 delinquent adolescents in Korea, using the proportional stratified random sampling method. Data were analyzed by the SAS program. Statistical method employed was Chi-square. The findings were as follows: (1) 79.65% of subjects reported a masturbatory experience (69.72% in students. 91.45% in delinquents, 88.1% in male, and 59.79% in female). (2) The adolescents began masturbatory behavior at 14. 15 years olds and male adolescents experienced masturbation at 14. whereas female adolescents at 13 years old. (3) The delinquent adolescents got information about masturbation through the peer group or senior member, but student adolescents had not yet proper sources of information. (4) The male adolescent behaved the higher rate of masturbation than the female adolescent. And the male adolescents got many informations about masturbation through the magazine, mass mediaincluding internet), peer group, senior member and incidentally, whereas female adolescents had not yet proper sources of information. (5) The highest emotional responses to one's own masturbatory behavior were ecstasy and pleasant feeling in Korean adolescents. In conclusion, it was found that masturbatory practices was very prevailed and, the onset of masturbatory behavior was appeared the early stage of teenage in Korean adolescents. However, the most Korean adolescents had gotten a information about masturbation and sexual behavior through the informal and improper resources. Therefore, the authors recommended that systematic sex education consisted of information related to adolescents' level of knowledge should be provided.
