The Effect of Group Therapy Program on Depression and Abstain Self - Efficacy of Alcoholic Inpatients

Abstract
Purpose of this study is to examine the effects of grouptherapy program in alcoholic inpatients, and to suggest the effective psychiatric nursing intervention useful for the maintain abstain and prevention from relapse. Fourth male inpatients by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-Ill RCAmerican Psychiatric Association, 1987) were sampled from G Mental Hospitals from May 2nd. 2001 to June 10th, 2001. They conviently divided into two groups; a control group of 20 and experimental group of 20 individuals. Grouptherapy program imployed to the experimental group by the researcher. The experimental group participated in a grouptherapy program, which were held lOhours for 2weeks. The Grouptherapy program in this study included the announcement of autobiography, sharing of abstain experience and merit, building the goal, recommendation Alcoholic Anonymous(AA). Collected data was analyzed using the Fisher' exact test, Mann-Whitney test with SPSS program. The result of this study was as follows: 1. There were significant differences of depression scores between the experimental and control group(z--5.280, p=0.000). 2. There were no significant differences of abstain self efficacy scores between the experimental and control group, but the experimental group was greater than of the control group(z=-1.562. p = 0.127). Based on the these resulted, Group therapy program for alcoholic inpatients was especially effective in decreasing the depression and increasing the abstain self efficacy. Therefore the group therapy program can be adopted as nursing intervention at alcoholic inpatients.
