Abstract
The purpose of this study was to offer basic information concerning nursing intervention by identifying the influencing factors on burden in alcoholic families. The subject of this study were 91 members of families who were inpatients or outpatients at two psychiatric hospitals in Gwang-Ju city and two psychiatric hospitals in Chonnam area and participated in AL-Anon family groups in Seoul and Gyoung-Gi area during the period from September 1 to November 31. 2000. The instruments for this study were used family burden scale developed by Pai and Kapur, social support scale developed by Brandt and Weinert, and mutuality scale developed by Archbold and Stewart. The collected data were analyzed by Descriptive Statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiple Regression by using the SPSS program. The result of this study were as follows : 1. Total burden was evaluated a little higher than the moderate level (mean score: 2.44). The highest was the interference of family leisure(mean score: 2.62) and the lowest was the effect on family physical health(mean score: 2.11). 2. As for the burden depending on general characteristics of families, there is a significant difference in marital status(F = 3.49, p = .O35), education level (F = 3.314. p = .024), views about patient's condition(F = 3.804, p = .027). 3. As for the burden depending on general characteristics of patients, there is a significant difference in frequency of hospitalization, participation in A.A.(F = 10.050, p = ,002). 4. The correlation of burden and social support was statistically significant(r = -.280. p = ,020). 5. The correlation of burden and quality of family relationship was statistically significant (r=-.438, p = .000). 6. Quality of family relationship accounted for 21% of the burden by the most important prediction to the burden of alcoholic families. The above results show that quality of family relationship made a contribution to reducing the burden of alcoholic families.
