Jung: Policy Efforts for the Internationalization of Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
The Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (JKPMHN) is an international academic journal that has published 33 volumes, 112 issues, and 1,206 articles since its inaugural issue in 1992, up to September 2024. Since 2019, it has been indexed in the Scopus database and is also tracked or indexed in KoreaMed, KoMCI, KoreaMed Synapse, KCI, CINAHL/EBSCO, DOI/CrossRef, and Google Scholar.
To date, the JKPMHN has made significant efforts to enhance international connectivity. In 2024, several policies were introduced to advance these ongoing efforts. This article aims to outline these new initiatives.
First, JKPMHN has taken steps to enhance the permanent identification and accessibility of all its articles by assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to every paper published since its inaugural issue. A DOI is a unique and permanent identifier for digital content, playing a crucial role in managing digital objects and accessing resources [1]. Initially, JKPMHN began assigning DOIs to articles starting from its 2010 issues. However, articles published prior to 2010 did not have DOIs. To fill this gap, the journal has decided to assign DOIs to all articles published since its first issue in 1992, starting in September 2024. As a result, every article in JKPMHN will have a DOI, which is expected to enhance citation management efficiency, strengthen the reliability and transparency of research, and positively impact the global dissemination of research findings.
Second, as a bilingual journal publishing articles in both Korean and English, JKPMHN recognizes the value of both languages and is committed to maintaining its identity as a mixed-language journal. However, in line with its goal of becoming an international journal, JKPMHN acknowledges the need to increase the publication of English articles to enhance its global presence and broaden its readership. To encourage more English submissions, JKPMHN has introduced a temporary policy waiving the Article Processing Charge (APC) for English submissions until June 2025. This initiative is part of a larger trend among academic journals to boost English submissions. For example, some journals, like JKPMHN, offer waivers or reductions in APCs for English manuscripts, while others, such as the Korean Journal of Adult Nursing (KJAN), assist authors by covering English editing costs. Additionally, other journals, including the Korean Journal of Family Medicine (KJFM), Osong public Health and Research perspectives (PHRP), and Child Health Nursing Research (CHNR), have adopted full-English publication policies to strengthen their global positioning. These diverse strategies illustrate the evolving approaches of academic journals in supporting the growth of English submissions and enhancing their international reach.
In particular, Journals that have adopted a full-English publication policy have reported positive outcomes, including improved publication metrics such as citation indices, which result from increased visibility for their articles. These findings are believed to significantly drive the expansion of full-English publication policies across various academic journals [2]. Despite the proven effectiveness of such policies, JKPMHN remains committed to its identity as a bilingual journal. This decision is not a compromise or a second-best alternative to full-English journals; instead, it represents the optimal choice for preserving the identity of the Korean language while embracing internationalization. Non-English articles have consistently played a crucial role in academic publishing [3], particularly in addressing local issues, applications, or contributions, where publication in the native language is both justified and essential.
Therefore, JKPMHN aims to increase the proportion of English articles while preserving its bilingual identity by continuing to publish Korean articles with English abstracts. This approach seeks to foster a global academic network while maintaining the journal's unique character.
Third, starting in July 2024, JKPMHN will expand its manuscript submission categories to include Original Papers, Review Papers, Invited Papers, and Editorials, with clearly defined requirements for each category. Previous manuscript types have been streamlined into these four categories to simplify and enhance submission management [4]. This initiative aims to reflect diverse academic methodologies, broaden the journal's academic scope, and engage a wider range of researchers. We encourage authors to contribute to this diversity by submitting various types of manuscripts.
Additionally, starting with the March 2025 issue, JKPMHN will publish invited papers themed "Digital Mental Health Nursing" as part of its editorial initiatives. This will lay the groundwork for future special issues that the journal plans to develop. Through these efforts, the JKPMHN Editorial Board aims to provide readers with opportunities for in-depth exploration of specific topics, foster intellectual exchanges, and offer fresh and engaging academic experiences.
The achievements of JKPMHN thus far have been made possible by the unwavering support and collaboration of its members and readers from around the globe. We are deeply grateful for their invaluable contributions. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the reviewers and editorial board members who have tirelessly worked to enhance the quality of JKPMHN's publications.
Looking ahead, JKPMHN will maintain international publication standards and ethics while promoting a stable submission system and a fair peer-review process. With this commitment, the journal is dedicated to advancing academic excellence and the ongoing development of psychiatric and mental health nursing.
