Kim: Improving Research Quality and Transparency in JKPMHN: Encouraging the Use of Reporting Guidelines
The Journal of Korean Academy of psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (JKPMHN) is dedicated to the advancement of psychiatric and mental health nursing by publishing innovative research focusing on development, evaluation, and evidence-based practice. This journal covers a wide range of topics including psychiatric and mental health nursing practice and education, community mental health, psychosocial interventions, management of mental disorders, complementary and alternative therapies, and cultural aspects of mental health care. It welcomes research addressing theoretical underpinnings, nursing practice, and applications across all age groups and special populations. JKPMHN publishes various types of manuscripts, including original articles, such as quantitative research, qualitative research, concept analyses, Q-methodological studies, and case studies. It also accepts reviews, such as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, and integrative reviews. In addition, invited papers, including issues, perspectives, and special essays, can be considered for publication.
JKPMHN publishes a variety of article types. Authors are encouraged to follow specific reporting guidelines from the EQUATOR (Enhancing the Quality and Transparency Of Health Research) network based on their study design [1]. The EQUATOR network presents internationally recognized reporting guidelines to ensure high standards of research transparency and rigor. Reporting guidelines are structured tools designed to help researchers write clear and complete manuscripts. They provide a minimum set of essential information to ensure that a research paper can be easily understood by readers, replicated by other researchers, used by healthcare professionals for decision-making, and included in systematic reviews. Rather than providing general advice, reporting guidelines are developed using explicit methods and presented in the form of a checklist, flowchart, or structured text. They outline key reporting elements that should be included in a paper and explain how these elements are determined. By following reporting guidelines, researchers can improve the transparency, accuracy, and applicability of their work.
Some commonly used guidelines include:
• Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) - CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials)
• Observational studies - STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology)
• Systematic reviews and meta-analyses - PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)
• Qualitative research - COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research)
• Case reports - CARE (Case Report Guidelines)
Authors should ensure that their manuscripts provide sufficient detail, particularly in the Methods section, so that others can replicate their study without needing additional information. Many reporting guidelines provide structured checklists outlining the minimum information required for different study designs. These checklists should be used during manuscript preparation. In some cases, authors may be required to submit a completed checklist with their manuscript. Peer reviewers may use these checklists when assessing manuscripts to ensure that essential details are adequately reported. Adherence to reporting guidelines can facilitate a smoother review process, making it easier for editors and reviewers to understand the work and reducing the likelihood of extensive revisions. Based on reporting guidelines provided by the EQUATOR network, authors should check and submit reporting guidelines checklist for the study before submission and reviewers should assess whether details are appropriate based on the checklist. By following these guidelines, JKPMHN will maintain the quality and credibility of published research, thereby facilitating meaningful contributions to psychiatry and mental health nursing.
