Abstract
Purpose
The purposes of this study were to investigate among stress, parent-adolescent communication, and suicidal ideation, to identify the predictors of suicidal ideation, and to assess the buffering effect of parent-adoles cent communication in the relationship between stress and suicidal ideation for adolescents.
Methods
The partic ipants were 1,033 adolescents. Data was collected through self-report questionnaires, which were constructed to include demographic-environmental factors and psychosocial variables. The data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program.
Results
Stress positively related to suicidal ideation, while stress negatively related to parent-adolescent communication for adolescents. Parent-adolescent communication significantly related to suici dal ideation for adolescents. The predictors of suicidal ideation for adolescents were stress, parent-adolescent communication, economic status, and religion, explaining 26.1% of the variance in suicidal ideation. Parent- ado lescent communication partially mediated the effect of stress on suicidal ideation for adolescents.
Conclusion
The result indicated that parent-adolescent communication partially buffered the effect of stress on suicidal ideation for adolescents. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that em phasizes increasing parent-adolescent communication in order to decrease adolescent suicidal ideation.
