Abstract |
Purpose This study attempted to examine the health condition, burden of caring, and the quality of life among family members of elderly with senile dementia, and through that, to provide the basis for improving the quality of life among family members of elderly with senile dementia.
Methods Subjects were 173 family members of elderly with senile dementia in theEandY area in Seoul. Data was collected from April to September 2007. Data was analyzed by the SAS program according to the aims of this study.
Results The health condition of the family showed a poor condition, the burden of caring was moderate, and the quality of life was good. The factors influencing the quality of life of the family members were health condition, burden of caring, age, and monthly allowance. The factor that was found to influence most the quality of life of the family was health condition.
Conclusion Health condition as a weakness factor affecting the family members of elderly with senile dementia should be seriously considered. Moreover, a detailed nursing intervention strategy must be developed to improve the health condition of the family. |
