The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an integrated smoking cessation program for patients with schizophrenia.
Methods
This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group repeated measures quasiexperimental study. The subjects were 47 patients wrth schizophrenia, 19 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. The integrated smoking cessation program was given to the experimental group once a week for 10 weeks. Data was collected before treatment, midterm, immediately after (posttest 1)and3 months after (posttest 2) the treatment. Data was analyzed by χ2 test, Fishels exact test, independent t-test, and repeated measures ANCOVA.
Results
After the treatment (posttest 1), between the experimental and control group, there was a significant difference in urine cotinine level. Midterm and after the treatment (posttest 1), between the experimental and control group, there were significant differences in stages of change of smoking behavior.
