Abstract |
Purpose This study was done to test the theory of planned behavior in the prediction of abstinence intention of female middle school students.
Methods The subjects were 296 female middle school students in U area. Data was collected using structured questionnaires in December, 2006 and was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with the SPSS(ver. 12.0) program.
Results 50.7% of the subjects had drinking experience. There were significant positive correlations among three variables(attitude toward abstinence, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control). These variables significantly predicted abstinence intention of female middle school students(44.5%, F=78.040, p=.000). The most powerful predictor of abstinence intention was perceived behavior control(39.3%).
However, attitude toward abstinence wasn't a significant predictor.
Conclusion The findings of this study show that perceived behavior control is the most powerful predictor of abstinence intention of female middle school students. Education programs which improve perceived behavior control are needed to promote abstinence intention of female middle school students. |
