Abstract |
Purpose The study was done to examine the factors influencing self-esteem in the elderly.
Methods Subjects were 357 elderly over 65 old years and living in Ha-Gye Dong, No-Won Gu. Data was collected from January 10 to April 10, 2007. Collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression through the SAS/PC 11.0 version.
Results As a result of multiple regression that was performed to seek factors influencing self-esteem, depression (p=-.274) was revealed as the most powerful factor in the elderly, followed by quality of life (p=.206), economic status (p=.136), and family support (p=.185) in that order. These factors explain 44.5 percent of self-esteem in the elderly.
Conclusion In conclusion, it is necessary to have lower levels of depression in the psychological aspect and higher levels of perceived health status, life satisfaction, family support, and quality of life in the intellectual aspect in order for successful aging with a higher level of self-esteem. |
