Abstract |
Purpose The purpose of this research was to develop and evaluate a stress management program for the aged at home in a small and medium city.
Methods This study employed a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Eighty elderly participants were selected from the enrolled members of 3 welfare centers and 6 senior room apartments and they were divided into an experimental group(40) and control group(40). The experimental group completed a stress management program for the elderly that consisted of a 4 session program, once a week over 4-weeks. The stress management program consisted of 4 educational programs to improve self-management behavior and humor therapy and was developed by analyzing published research and books. Effectiveness of the stress management program was evaluated by implementing the program with 40 elders living at home in a local city, one session a week, 2 hours per session over 4 weeks from March 10 to December 7, 2007.
Results The results indicated that significant differences were shown in stress and program effectiveness (smooth and positive emotion) between the experimental group and control group.
Conclusion The stress management program is effective for decreasing stress and increasing program effectiveness(smooth and positive emotion) of the aged at home in a small and medium city. |
