Correlation of Internet Addiction, Peer Attachment, and Coping with School Life among Middle School Students |

Abstract |
Purpose The problem of adolescents' Internet addiction is continuously increasing in Korea but appropriate prevention and intervention programs have not been developed. The purpose of this study was to explore correlation among Internet addiction, peer attachment, and coping with school life.
Methods Data were collected from 435 adolescents with using structured questionnaire. Korean version of internet addiction self-test scale(KIA), the inventory of parent and peer attachnient(IPPA), and youth coping scale(YCS) were used.
Results 1) The internet addiction rate was 4.0% and potential risk rate for addiction was 3.3%. 2) There was low positive correlation between internet addiction and peer attachment. 3) Internet addiction and coping with school life were negatively correlated. The subvariables of coping with school life such as planning, responsibility, and self-control had negative correlations to internet addiction.
Conclusion This study showed that Internet addiction had positive correlation with peer attachment but negative correlation with coping with school life. The results of this study will have influence over the development of the Internet addiction prevention program and intervention program. |
