Abstract
Purpose
The objectives of this study are to examine the rates of depression, self esteem and social support experienced by civil service and bar exam applicants and to identify factors influencing depression of applicants preparing for civil service and bar exams.
Methods
Data were collected from the 269 subjects preparing for the bar examination and civil service exam using the Beck Depression Inventory- II(BDI- II), the Rosenberg self esteem Scale (SES) and the perceived social support scale. The data were analyzed, using SPSS/PC Will I0.0.
Results
In depression, statistically significant differences were found for age, the type of examination and the period of preparation for examinations. Depression and self esteem were found to have a negative correlation. The same tendency was identified in the correlation between social support and depression. In contrast, self esteem and social support were found to be positively correlated.
Conclusion
The findings of this study indicate that there is a positive relationship between self esteem and social support and a negative relationship between self esteem, social support and depression. However, contrary to widespread belief, the subjects feel only minimally depressed and their self esteem is not excessively low. In addition, the subjects perceive that they are receiving reasonably sufficient social support. The results of the study will be useful for community menial health nurses to take care of applicants preparing for civil service and bar exams in the community.
Key Words: Self esteem; Social support; Depression
