A Study of Influencing Factors on the Emotional-Behavioral Problem of Middle School Students In a City

Abstract
Purpose
This study was to investigate the influencing factors on emotional-behavioral problem of middle school students in a city.
Methods
The subjects for this study were 447 students in middle school in Gwangju. The data was collected during the period from March to April, 2004 by use of questionnaires. The instruments used were K-YSR, Stress, Self-esteem and School Life Attitude measurement. The data was analyzed by frequency, mean score, pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program.
Results
Mean score of emotional-behavioral problem was 62.6, stress score 45.4, self-esteem score 20.6, and school life attitude score 163.5. Emotional-behavioral problem showed a significant positive correlation with stress(r=.494), and negative correlation with self-esteem(r=-.445) and school life attitude(r=-.326). In addition, variables that predicted emotional -behavioral problem were lower self-esteem, economic factor, school factor & peer factor of stress, isolation in peer relation of school life attitude(40.8%).
Conclusion
It should be developed school mental health program to intervene predictors to early prevent emotional-behavioral problem of middle school students in school system.
