Abstract |
Purpose This study was conducted by investigating alcoholic couples and their types of communication to provide the necessary data for improving their communication problems.
Methods A questionnaire survey was administered to 50 alcoholic couples with the husbands receiving treatment as inpatients or outpatients after being diagnosed as alcoholics at K Hospital in U City and 50 normal couples living in Seoul and Incheon.
Results 1) The two groups also showed significant difference in terms of communication types. Alcoholics in particular tended to be indifferent to communication, although their wives showed the highest tendency toward mutual respect. 2) The combined types of communication between the two groups significantly differed, with the communication types of alcoholic couples found to be mostly dysfunctional and those of normal couples found to be mostly functional. 3) There was also a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the efficiency of communication, where alcoholics and their wives showed an average of 5.12 and 3.41 points, respectively.
Conclusion Results suggest that alcoholic couples use more dysfunctional communication methods compared to normal couples. It is therefore necessary to develop various programs to address the communication problems based on the results of this study. |
