Purpose This study was examined the effect of cognitive-behavioral program by improving self-esteem on the problem-solving ability and depression on the nursing students.
Methods Control subjects(n=15) and experimental subjects(n=10) are selected from the 195 final year nursing students. Control subjects were randomly sampled while experimental subjects were volunteers who heard the details of program from researcher. The cognitive -behavioral program was only conducted to the experimental group once a week for 8weeks, 150min per session.
The research was conducted from 1st week November to 4th week December 2004. For both group the scores of problem-solving ability, depression were measured before and after the experiment.
Results The scores of problem-solving ability significantly decreased in the experimental group(p=0.002), total scores and confidence, approach-avoidance style, personal control scores were significantly decreased in the experimental group. There was significant difference within and between two groups in scores of depression after the experiment(p=0.009). There is no correlation between problem-solving ability and depression.
Conclusion The cognitive-behavioral program by improving self-esteem has a positive effect on problem-solving ability, and depression in nursing students. Thus program could be considered as a useful nursing intervention program to correct the maladaptive attitude and emotion in nursing students. |
