Abstract |
Purpose This study was to explore factors that influence nurse*s attitude toward hospice.
Methods This study utilized correlational design. The convenience sample was composed of 101 Registered Nurses in general hospitals in a city. Stepwise multiple regression was used to identify significant factors influencing attitude toward hospice.
Attitude toward hospice was measured by the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale, Korean version(FATCOD-K). Spiritual health was measured by the Spiritual Health Inventory Scale, Korean version (SHI-K). Mental health was measured by the Mental Health Scale. Death orientation was measured using the Death Orientation Scale, Korean version.
Results Attitude toward hospice was significantly influenced by death orientation, educational experience of hospice, and subject's indirect experience of dying. This regression model explained 31% of the variances in Attitude toward hospice. Death orientation explained 20% of the variances, and educational experience explained 8% of the variances.
Conclusion The professional nurses can provide more effective care for their hospice patients by having positive acceptance of dying and death. Nurses in clinical setting should receive the education related to the hospice theory and practice. |
