Relationship among Housewives’ Internet Addiction Tendency, Marital Communication and Marital Satisfaction

Abstract
Purpose
This study was about the effects on housewives' internet addiction, the married couple's communication and satisfaction. Also, it was about to provide basic data, through desirable internet usage by housewives for the health education.
Methods
The data were collected from September 1st, 2004 to October 4th, and subjects were 394 married women who lived in Seoul and its vicinity. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Stepwise multiple regression.
Results
1. The average internet usage a day was 2.2 hours, period since first usage was 4.5 years. The purpose of the internet usage was for getting infbrmation(27.2%) and playing games(17.3%). 2. In the degree of the internet addiction, 4.0% of the subjects were addicted highly. 3. The score range of communication between spouses was 29 — 145, with mean score of 95.9. The score range of marital satisfaction was 18~90 with mean score of 57.3. 4. There were significant differences in addictiveness degree in relation to marital period(p=.015), children’s number(p=.004), age(p=.O16), occupation(p=.038), usage hour a day(p=.000), and purpose of the internet usage(p=.000). 5. The higher-addiction group showed lower mean score of 88.3 and lower-addiction group of 89.3 compared with non-addicted group of 101.6 in communication between spouses. Also, marital satisfaction, the addicted group showed lower average score of 52.8 and lower-addiction group of 53.8 compared with non-addicted group of 60.6. 6. There was significant correlation between subjects* internet addiction score and marital communication (r=-.518, p=000) and satisfaction(r=-.358, p=000). The higher internet addiction tendency was, the lower marital communication and satisfaction was. 7. The major variable that affected housewives' internet addiction was marital satisfaction (11.2%). In addiction to this, it would explain 19.7% in total when usage hour a day(8.5%) was added.
Conclusions
The high proportion of housewives、who played important roles at home, internet addiction, showed the essential need for preventive programs against it.
