Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate psychometrics of the Care Dependency ScaleKorean version(CDS-K) for the institutionalized Korean with dementia. The original CDS was developed by Dijkstra et al. for assessing the nursing dimensions of the demented patient's degree of dependency. The scale was translated and back translated by bilingual persons, and then was modified to resolve variations in the translations. The CDS-K was administered to convenient sample consisting of 151 Korean with dementia institutionalized in long term care facilities. High alpha coefficient .93 and interrater reliability between kappa of .27 and .92 were revealed. The results of the factor analysis led to a three factor solution explaining 69.07% of variance of the 15 item scale. The results of determining criterion-related validity of the CDS-K on the Mini Mental State ExaminationKorean version(MMSE-K) and the Rapid Disability Rating Scale-2(RDRS-2) indicated that CDS-K was strongly correlated with MMSE-K and moderately correlated with RDRS-2. The results indicated that the CDS-K the institutionalized Korean with dementia was reliable and valid in assessing the care dependency of the institutionalized Korean with dementia, so that the scale can be used appropriately in Korean long term care facility practice and future studies related to dementia.
