Abstract |
This study investigated effects of group therapy on the mental health for alcoholic families. The study subjects were purposive sample of 8 families receiving group therapy once a week for six months from June, 1999 to May, 2000. The contents of group therapy were the share of their experiences, exchange of ideas dealing with alcoholics and empathizing each other. Finally the researcher interviewed and helped their plan to overcome internal conflicts and crisis.
Two methods were applied to measure the effects of group therapy. One was the application of Symptom Check List-90-Revision and the other one was the narrative recording and observation during counseling.
The study finding were as follow:
The scores of Somatization, Obsessivecompulsive Depression, Anxiety, hostility, Phobic anxiety, Paranoid ideation, Psychocitism significantly decreased after treatment at 0.1 level. The behaviors and communication skills of dealing with family member's alcoholic problem were also remarkably improved.
These results indicate that group therapy is effective in the improving mental health for alcoholic families. So it suggests that this group therapy could be more effective nursing intervention for promoting mental health alcoholic families in community. |
