Abstract |
General characteristics and drinking pattern of alcoholics and the relation of these characteristics to depression were investigated. The levels of depression, self-esteem, and hopelessness in alcoholics and their correlation were studied to provide data in developing effective nursing intervention.
The study was carried out for 124 alcoholics at hospitals in Taegu and Kvungpook areas from May to June in 1999. The instruments used for this study were Beck's Depression Inventory and Hopelessness Scale and Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale.
The reliability of the scales were tested by Cronbach's alpha.
The collected data weru analyzed by the SPSS/WIN 8.0 using t-test, F~test, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results were as follows:
1. There were no significant differences between the general characteristics of the subjects and depression.
2. There were no significant differences between drinking pattern and degression.
3. The mean scores for depression, self-esteem, and hopelessness of subjects were 25.14, 27.32, and 45.91, respectively.
4. Significant negative correlation between selfesteem and depression was found while a significant positive correlation was found between hopelessness and depression. |
