A Study on Middle and High School Teacher's Opinion about Mental Illness

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the re lationship between middle and high school teacher’s opinion about mental illness and their general characteristics. The subjects were a sample of 213 teachers selected from three middle schools and three high schools in Seoul. Data was collected from January to March in 1998 through questionnaires. The questionnaire was developed by Cohen and Struening referred to as the “Opinions about Mental Illness(OMI) Scale”. The scale has 51 Likert-type items. Data analysis include means, percentages, t-test, and ANOVA. The finding of the study are as follows : 1. Authoritarianism(Factor A) was found to be sig nificantly related to such variables as age, sex, existence of mental patien; in the family or rela tive. 2. Benevolence(Factor B) was found to be signifi cantly related to such variables as age, the niiniber of years of service, existence of mental patient in the family or relative. 3. Mental Health Ideology (Factor C) was found to be significantly related to such variables as age, marriage state, existence of children, the number of years of service. 4. Social Restrictiveness(Factor D) was found to be significantly related to such variables as age, mar riage state, existence of children, the number of years of service. 5. Interpersonal Etiology (Factor E) was found to be significantly related to such variables as age, the number of years of service.
