The Comparative Study on Perceived Stress, Ways of Coping, Stress Symptoms of Peptic Ulcer Patients and Healthy person

Abstract
This study was designed to identify the correlations between the perceived stress, ways of coping, stress symptoms of Peptic Ulcer Patients. The data were collected a period of 6 weeks from December 20,1995 to February 10, 1996. The subjects for this study were 26 peptic ulcer patients in one university hospital and 22 healthy persons in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed by SAS program, using descriptive statistics and t — test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients. The results were as follows : 1. There was significant differences between peptic ulcer patients* and healthy persons* perceived stress(t =2.21, p<.05). 2. There was significant differences between peptic ulcer patients* and healthy persons* stress stmptoms(t=4.94, p<.01). 3. There was significant differences between peptic ulcer patients * and healthy persons* problem— oriented coping style(t= -2.25, p< .05). 4. The relation between the perceived stress and the stress symptoms of peptic ulcer patients revealed significant correlation(r—.66, p<.01). 5. The relationship between the perceived stress and the emotional oriented coping style of peptic ulcer patients revealed no significant correlation. However, the relationship between the perceived stress and the emotional oriented coping style of peptc ulcer patients revealed positively correlation, the relationship between the perceived stress and the problem—oriented coping style of peptic ulcer patients revealed negatively correlation. 6. The relationship between the stress symptoms and the emotional oriented coping style of peptic ulcer patients revealed no significant correlation. However, the relationship between the stress symptoms and the emotional oriented coping style of peptc ulcer patients revealed positively corre lation, the relationship between the stress symptoms and the problem—oriented coping style of peptic ulcer patients revealed negatively correlation. In conclusion, the perceived stress, emotional coping style and stress symptoms of peptic ulcer patients were higher than healthy person. And coping style of peptic ulcer patients used more emotional oriented coping style than problem-oriented coping style.
